Texture analyses and microstructural evolution in monolithic U-Mo nuclear fuel

چکیده
This work describes the microstructural evolution of prototypical monolithic U-Mo fuel plates analyzed via scanning electron microscopy and backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The understanding textural nuclear from as-fabricated to post-irradiation is important in assessing changes material properties during irradiation. In our it was observed that typical fabrication techniques applied U-10Mo develop features associated with a cold-rolled body-centered cubic (bcc) texture development ? ? fiber (parallel rolling normal direction). After irradiation, loss fabrication-induced preferred orientation an increased spread grain-boundary misorientation as burnup increases. Grain subdivision irradiated samples formation submicron grains (200–500 nm). Evidence for polygonization mechanism leading grain detected. has been first time EBSD low-angle boundaries (<15 degrees) at site grains. Such analyses (from after irradiation) have potential help validate physics-based models provide key feedback loop further understand interplay between processes performance.

Microstructural Evolution, Thermodynamics, and Kinetics of Mo-Tm2O3 Powder Mixtures during Ball Milling
The microstructural evolution, thermodynamics, and kinetics of Mo (21 wt %) Tm₂O₃ powder mixtures during ball milling were investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Ball milling induced Tm₂O₃ to be decomposed and then dissolved into Mo crystal. After 96 h of ball milling, Tm₂O₃ was dissolved completely and the supersaturated nanocrystalline solid solution of Mo ...
متن کاملMonolithic Fuel and High-Flux Reactor Conversion
Monolithic fuels are the most promising candidate for a next generation of high-density research reactor fuels. If successfully developed, the remaining HEU-fueled reactors in the world could presumably be converted to low-enriched fuel — and the use of highly enriched uranium in the civilian nuclear fuel cycle eventually terminated. The most challenging type of reactors to convert are single e...

The recent development on TEM work of irradiated RERTR fuels includes characterization of the irradiated U-10Mo/Alloy-6061 monolithic fuel plate, the RERTR7 U-7Mo/Al-2Si and U-7Mo/Al-5Si dispersion fuel plates. It is the first time that a TEM sample of an irradiated nuclear fuel was prepared using the focused-ion-beam (FIB) liftout technical at the Idaho National Laboratory. Multiple FIB TEM sa...
متن کاملMicrostructural Evolution in OrthotropicElastic Media
We consider the problem of microstructural evolution in binary alloys in two dimensions. The microstructure consists of arbitrarily shaped precipitates embedded in a matrix. Both the precipitates and the matrix are taken to be elastically anisotropic, with different elastic constants. The interfacial energy at the precipitate– matrix interfaces is also taken to be anisotropic. This is an extens...
متن کاملMicrostructural evolution and metastability in active materials
Mctastable systems pose significant problems in both analysis and simulation. We discuss here the evolution of microstructure in a shape-memory alloy where energetic contributions from disparate scales play determining roles. This is a challenge for modelling since the finest length scales cannot be 'seen* at macroscopic level. We then provide a mechanism for kinetics that gives a different not...
